Highlighting our members – Madeleine Weightman

Each month, we spotlight a valued member of the Company of Communicators.

This month, we’re delighted to feature Madeleine Weightman, based in Guildford, Surrey. She’s the Co-Founder of The Work Crowd, a platform connecting organisations with freelance communications talent.

Her journey into the industry began with a conversation with her sister, Alice Weightman, founder of Hanson Search. Inspired by the changing nature of work and the growing demand for flexible careers, the pair launched The Work Crowd—empowering professionals to work independently and businesses to scale their communications with ease.

How long have you been in Communications?

"Nine years, although communications has played a central role in every position I’ve held. It’s fundamental to good business."

How did you come into Communications?

"My sister Alice had the idea for a network of freelance communications professionals. We co-founded The Work Crowd to help businesses access this talent easily, especially as more people began seeking independent careers."

What’s been a highlight of working in Communications?

"Without a doubt, it’s the people. Hearing their stories has shown me just how powerful good communication can be—and what happens when it’s ignored."

Quick fire questions!

Why does Communication matter?

"As social beings, humans rely on connection. In business, clear and effective communication is essential for building relationships, engaging audiences, and achieving strategic success."

If you could change one thing about the industry, what would it be?

"Accessibility. It’s still quite London-centric, and internships—while improving—can still be a barrier. True diversity remains a work in progress."

Too much or too little: which is worse in Comms?

"Both! The real skill is in saying just enough to be effective. Say too much and you lose your audience; too little and your message may never land."

If you would like to learn more about how to join the company, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the clerk, Ian Wingfield, who can be reached on email - clerk@companyofcommunicators.org
