Combating disinformation: essential skills for the digital age

In today's media landscape, understanding disinformation is essential for all. Our interactive workshop equips students with the critical thinking skills needed to navigate an increasingly complex information environment.

What the lesson covers

This session explores the shift in how young people consume news, from traditional media to algorithm-driven social platforms. Students discover how social algorithms prioritise viral content over accuracy, creating perfect conditions for misinformation to spread. The lesson examines real-world examples of state-sponsored disinformation campaigns, deepfake technology, and how hostile actors exploit social media to advance harmful agendas.

Drawing on academic research, including Van der Linden's "attitudinal inoculation theory”, students learn why people are susceptible to false information and how to build cognitive resistance against manipulation. The session distinguishes between misinformation (accidental falsehoods), disinformation (deliberate deception), and propaganda (information designed to manipulate).

Interactive learning experience

Delivered through a presentation with embedded real-world examples, the 75-minute session maintains high engagement through thought-provoking questions, group discussions, and practical exercises. Students look at actual case studies, identify red flags in suspicious content, and understand fact-checking techniques they can immediately apply to their digital interactions.

The workshop contains actionable strategies for critical evaluation: questioning sources, cross-referencing information, understanding algorithmic bias, and recognising emotional manipulation techniques. Students will leave with the necessary tools to become more aware information consumers.
