Master's Update to the Company

It is a great honour to be chosen to be Master in the Company’s 25th anniversary year and I am grateful to all of you who joined me last Friday at our fantastic installation dinner, where we also welcomed some new Court Assistants and a new Warden.

At the dinner I noted that the Livery movement has historically brought together leaders in the crafts, trades and professions that have been at the centre of economic and cultural life not just in London, but the wider nation.

In June 2000 we were formed as the Guild of Public Relations Practitioners. When we began, less than half of company values on the S&P were attributed to intangibles; today that is over 90%. As the profession of Communications has grown in importance and prospered, so have we.

We stand on the precipice of achieving full livery company status – taking our place alongside the ancient and modern professions that have been so important – and I strongly believe that this reflects the value we provide to the British economy.

It is why I have decided to take as the theme for my year as Master: “Communicators; value creators.”

Through our events this year, you will not only have the opportunity to network with fellow members in some very interesting and rarely accessible surroundings but also see how Communicators across a variety of organisations create value.

I also want to update you on our progress to full livery status. The General Purposes Committee of the Court of Aldermen will, in private session, discuss our application to become a full livery company on the morning of March 4. Should it be approved, our move to full livery status will be confirmed at the Court of Aldermen meeting at 12.30 that day. I hope to be able to pass on some good news on that date.

My thanks must go to our wonderful Clerk, Ian, for all he continues do for our Company as well as all the hard-working Wardens and members of the Court. However, I especially want to thank my predecessor as Master, Sally Sykes. She has led our Company with great aplomb and acted as an ambassador for us across the Livery Movement, the Communications profession and beyond. Together with her wonderful Consort, Paul, Charles and I are following in some formidable footsteps. I also want to thank outgoing Deputy Master Mark Glover for all the work he has done for the Company as well. We are truly blessed to have such committed leaders; I hope that I will be a worthy successor.

Jason Groves, Master Communicator
