Members of the Worshipful Company of Communicators were granted a private tour of Westminster Abbey on Tuesday evening.

This special event was led by Dr. Tony Trowles, Head of the Abbey Collection and Librarian, who provided an in-depth look at how one of Britain’s most historic religious sites is embracing digital innovation to preserve and share its rich heritage.

The tour offered attendees a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the Abbey’s digital transformation efforts, including the digitisation of its extensive archives and the integration of modern technology to enhance visitor engagement. Dr. Trowles shared insights into the challenges and triumphs of bringing centuries-old manuscripts and artifacts into the digital age, highlighting the balance between maintaining tradition and embracing innovation.

Participants also had the rare chance to view areas of the Abbey not usually accessible to the public, gaining a deeper appreciation for the meticulous work involved in preserving such a significant historical site. The event underscored the importance of digital communication in modern heritage conservation and offered a compelling example of how historical institutions can adapt to contemporary technological advancements.

Jason Groves, Master of the Company, said: “It was fantastic to welcome the Masters of several other livery companies, together with members of the Worshipful Company of Communicators, to Westminster Abbey for a private tour and talk. We were very privileged to hear from Adrian Harris, the Head of Communications and Digital, and Dr Tony Trowles, Head of Collections, not only about the history of this 1,000-year-old site of Christian worship but how they are continually improving their ability to communicate to audiences of up to billions of people around the world. Huge thanks to the team at the Abbey for their generous hospitality and welcome.”
