About the Event

Julius Caesar was one of the great figures of world history. He was a political and military leader whose career many have since tried to emulate, but few have succeeded. However, most relevantly he was arguably the greatest communicator of the ancient world, a man whose career we can follow in exquisite detail thanks to his own writings. In this talk Dr Simon Elliott will detail Caesar's early life as he survived the tribulations of civil war between the optimates and popularise politics factions in Rome, and then cover his rise to the very top of the Roman world, before his ultimate assassination in 44 BC. This is a tale of great bravery in the face of adversity, of tenacity, grit and self belief, with Caesar's ultimate success meaning he paid the ultimate price for ambition.
