Why did you join the Company of Communicators?

Jonathan Chandler: I think like most members, I was intrigued! I’d been running international in-house teams for quite a while and not particularly connected to the City or the London comms community. So joining provided a great “home base” to share ideas and learn from a diverse group of professionals.

What benefits have you derived from joining?

Jonathan Chandler: Initially it was fellowship and widening the network, and I’ve made some long-lasting friends! But over time it went well beyond that; as Master I explored how we could contribute to the social enterprise movement and other aspects of social impact; that has shaped what I do and who I work with today.

What are the main challenges you are experiencing in communications today?

Jonathan Chandler: I don’t think there’s ever been a better time to be in the communications space, providing you know how you’re creating value for your organisation or agency; be it to advance social purpose or to deliver brilliant creative work to propel a brand. Ideally, both!

I think the biggest challenge, in-house, agency and services, is how to find and resource talent – what should be core, what should be flexible and outsourced; and which skillsets you can only successfully develop within the “house” - and which ones you can hire for. No-one should be afraid to specialise; you’ll never be short of work if you master a segment of our increasingly vast universe.
